Congresswoman Nancy Mace Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Eric Bowman
Everyone Has the Right to be Free From Defamatory Attacks
(Charleston, S.C., May 12, 2025) — U.S. Representative Nancy Mace (SC-01) has filed a defamation lawsuit against Eric Bernard Bowman in response to numerous objectively false, malicious, and damaging statements made by Bowman.
The lawsuit alleges a disturbing pattern of behavior by Bowman, who in the wake of Rep. Mace’s February 10, 2025, floor speech disclosing her personal experience as a survivor of sexual assault and voyeurism, launched a campaign of malicious and objectively false attacks on Rep. Mace’s fitness to hold public office, falsely claiming she engaged in illegal activity while serving in the House of Representatives.
"These claims are not only completely false but were made with malicious intent to damage my character and undermine the trust placed in me by the people of South Carolina," said Congresswoman Mace. "I knew getting into politics that I would frequently face harsh, disparaging, and even objectively untrue statements. But no one is—or should be—required to sit idly by and suffer the abuse and damage of repeated and malicious outright falsehoods. I will not be intimidated or silenced by lies.”
The complaint alleges that, since Rep. Mace’s February 10th floor speech, Bowman intentionally and repeatedly, malicious and falsely accused Rep. Mace of illegally influencing the award of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) contracts to friends and political allies.
These falsehoods were set against a wide range of repugnant character attacks so pronounced that at least one media publication likened Bowman’s X feed to holy warfare against Rep. Mace. Bowman’s demonstrably false accusations were disseminated to thousands of people online, were known to be false when made, and were designed to erode public confidence in Rep. Mace’s fitness for office.
“I was elected to Congress to stand for those who cannot stand on their own,” added Congresswoman Mace. “I will not back down. And I will properly use every legal tool available to defend myself and ensure justice is served."
Congresswoman Mace remains committed to her legislative work, including her ongoing efforts to support survivors of violence and advocate for the citizens of South Carolina’s First Congressional District.
