Mace: So-Called "American Rescue Plan" Was Never About COVID-19 Relief

March 10, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) issued the following statement Wednesday after voting against final passage of Pelosi's Payoff to Progressives:

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: this 'COVID-19 Relief' bill has nothing to do with COVID-19 relief. Of the $1.9 trillion in new spending in this monstrosity, less than 9% of it is slated to actually fight the pandemic. Even worse, $1 trillion sent by Congress for COVID-19 relief hasn't even been spent yet.

"Even with all the changes made in the Senate, hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars will still be wasted on a Christmas list of wasteful schemes radical liberals pushed for long before the pandemic:

  • A $1.5 billion Amtrak bailout
  • $12 billion in foreign aid
  • $86 billion in union pension bailouts
  • A $34 billion ObamaCare bailout
  • A $350 billion bailout for state governments who ramped up wasteful spending while wrecking their own economies

"The last five COVID-19 relief packages were all overwhelmingly bipartisan. There were Republican proposals which would've sent $2,400 relief checks to Americans, reopened schools, and accelerated vaccinations for less than half what this will cost taxpayers.

"This isn't a result of Republicans crossing their arms and saying 'no.' This is a result of Democrats taking Rahm Emanuel's advice: 'You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.'"
