Rep. Mace and Oversight Committee Calls For Answers on Decision to Revoke Title 42

April 5, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) joined Ranking Member Comer (R-KY) and other colleagues on the House Oversight Committee in voicing their concern about the CDC’s decision to rescind Title 42.

“CDC Director Rochelle Walensky intends to lift the Title 42 Order by the end of May. This is alarming. I have seen firsthand how invaluable this tool has been to our Border Patrol and Immigration Agents in helping to prevent another national security and humanitarian catastrophe at the southern border.” Rep. Mace said. “Today I joined with my Republican colleagues on the Oversight Committee in demanding answers from the Department on Homeland Security on their readiness capabilities and what, if any, preparations are underway to manage the expected influx of illegal border crossers.”

The CDC’s Title 42 order directs DHS to expel certain “covered noncitizens” without processing them under the immigration laws in Title 8 because of the continuing global pandemic related to the COVID-19 virus.

The letter sent to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas states: “We write to conduct oversight of the Biden Administration’s decision to rescind a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s order, which will turn the humanitarian and national security crisis on the U.S. southern border into a catastrophe. The Administration’s decision comes at a time when Americans are still forced to comply with COVID-19 mandates in their daily lives. The Administration has decided to prioritize rescinding this order over rescinding mask and vaccine mandates for the American people. Immigration experts predict that rescinding the CDC’s Title 42 order will even further overwhelm U.S. Border Patrol officers and facilities. DHS must adequately prepare to respond to the impending border surge to prevent exacerbating the ongoing national security and humanitarian catastrophe.”
