Rep. Mace Passes Bill Out of Committee to Name S.C. Post Office in Honor of Robert Smalls
Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) released the following statement on the passage of her bill out of committee to name a post office in Beaufort after Robert Smalls:
“One hundred and eighty two years ago, Robert Smalls was born a slave in Beaufort. Seventy five years later, he died having left a tremendous impact on our state and our country. Having bravely liberated himself from slavery aboard the war ship Planter, he went on to found the South Carolina Republican Party. He then served his state and his country in the General Assembly and in the U.S. House of Representatives. He leaves an unmistakable legacy of grit, bravery, and determination which is imbued in the spirit of the Lowcountry to this day. Each day I spend in Congress, I strive to live up to the values which Robert Smalls so clearly embodied,” said Rep. Mace.“I’m thankful for the support of the entire South Carolina Delegation as co-sponsors of this legislation. Naming the post office at 11 Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort, S.C. is an important way to honor the legacy of this exceptional American and celebrate the rich history in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.”
