Washington, D.C. - Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) released the following statement on the retirement of Jim Newsome and appointment of Barbara Melvin as new SC Ports Authority CEO:

“Jim Newsome’s impact on the Lowcountry and our great state as a whole cannot be understated. Since 2009, through his leadership, Charleston became a top 10 U.S. port,” said Rep. Additionally, Newsome was responsible for securing South Carolina’s future by pushing for the deepening of our harbors by 2022 to accommodate even more industry. SC ports will be the deepest on the East Coast. Sending him best wishes for a very happy retirement.

“I want to congratulate incoming CEO Barbara Melvin on her new role. As new CEO of the Ports, Barbara is breaking glass ceilings as the first female leader of a top 10 U.S. operating port. Barbara is a trailblazer and a role model for our state. I look forward to continuing to work with her.”
