Rep. Mace Votes to Restore Congress' War Powers, Repeal 2002 AUMF

June 17, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) released the following statement regarding her vote to repeal the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF):

"Nearly two decades ago, Congress authorized the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But ever since, the Washington foreign policy establishment has used those authorizations to justify dragging out these conflicts and dragging us into new unchecked, unilateral, never-ending wars across the globe," Mace said. "Americans who weren't even alive on 9/11 or during the invasion of Iraq are fighting and dying there and in Syria, across Africa, and who knows where else.

"Our Founders wisely gave Congress exclusive constitutional authority over whether our nation goes to war. Sadly, they've failed to perform this sacred responsibility for far too long. No more.

"When Washington bureaucrats drag us into a war, they aren’t the ones who will do the fighting and dying. Our children will. The very least we can do is give their parents a say in when, where, and if their kids will fight and die thousands of miles away."
