Rep. Nancy Mace Helps Deliver $1.8 Million Win For Berkeley County First Responders

January 28, 2026

Rep. Mace Supported Critical Funding for Fire Boats and Emergency Equipment to Protect Lowcountry Communities

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Jan. 28, 2026) — Today, Congresswoman Nancy Mace announced Berkeley County has been awarded $1.8 million through the South Carolina Department of Veterans' Affairs (SCDVA) Military Enhancement Fund for two new firefighting vessels and a heavy duty tow vehicle, a major investment in the Lowcountry's emergency response capabilities and public safety.

Rep. Mace worked with Berkeley County, providing a letter of support for the grant application which highlighted why the County is a strong candidate and how enhanced maritime emergency response capabilities serve both military and civilian needs across the Lowcountry.

"Our first responders put their lives on the line every single day to protect South Carolinians, and they deserve every resource we can give them," said Congresswoman Mace. "This investment ensures our brave first responders have the tools they need while protecting our families, neighborhoods, and the military installations our entire region depends on."

Berkeley County serves as a cornerstone for defense operations in South Carolina, especially with its proximity to Joint Base Charleston. The addition of these firefighting vessels and tow vehicle will expand Marine Incident Response Team coverage, cut response times, and improve coordination when emergencies strike the Cooper River and Lake Moultrie.

"When emergencies hit our waterways, seconds matter. Our firefighters and rescue teams run toward danger while others run away, they shouldn't have to do it without the right equipment," Mace added. "Whether it's a fire, chemical spill, or another crisis, this equipment could mean the difference between our first responders saving lives or losing them. They risk everything for us. This is the least we can do for them, and it's a win for residents, service members, and the heroes who protect our streets every day."
