Rep. Nancy Mace Introduces Bill to Expose Microplastics Hidden in Clothing
November 5, 2026
New bill requires clothing labels to disclose estimated microplastic content
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Nov. 5, 2026) – Today, Congresswoman Nancy Mace introduced the Clothing Microplastic Transparency Act of 2026, legislation requiring clothing companies to disclose microplastic content in the products they sell.
“Americans deserve to know what is in the clothing touching their skin all day long,” said Congresswoman Mace. “While current labels list fiber content, they do not disclose microplastics. Our bill puts the facts on the tag. At a time when microplastics and other components have fueled health concerns, you deserve to know what you wear.”
The Clothing Microplastic Transparency Act would:
- Require any company selling or offering clothing for sale to disclose the estimated mass of microplastic in each item through a stamp, tag, label, or similar identification.
- Direct the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in consultation with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to issue regulations within one year of enactment, including a standardized test method companies must use to estimate microplastic content.
- Treat violations as unfair or deceptive acts or practices under the Federal Trade Commission Act, enforced by the FTC.
