July 23, 2025

Legislation Advances to Modernize VA Systems and Protect Veterans’ Data

(Washington, D.C., July 23, 2025) — Today, Congresswoman Nancy Mace’s legislation, the Veterans Affairs Distributed Ledger Technology Act, passed out of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. This marks a major step forward in efforts to modernize the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) through blockchain innovation.

The bill would direct the VA to explore the use of distributed ledger technology, such as blockchain, to enhance operational efficiency, increase transparency, reduce fraud, and improve the delivery of benefits to America’s veterans.

“Our veterans deserve a VA system working for them, not against them,” said Congresswoman Mace. “This bill uses secure, cutting-edge technology to protect data, streamline benefits, and finally bring the VA into the 21st century. We’re ready to get this across the finish line and give veterans the system they’ve earned.”

Under the legislation, the VA would be required to conduct a comprehensive study on how blockchain technology can be used to improve the clarity, traceability, and reliability of veterans’ benefits claims, reduce the risk of fraudulent and inaccurate claims, improve accountability in the handling of claims, and identify irregularities in benefits delivery.

Originally introduced in the 118th Congress, the bill has garnered support from technology leaders, and it aligns with broader efforts to modernize federal agencies using secure, transparent digital infrastructure.

The Veterans Affairs Distributed Ledger Technology Act now advances to the House floor.
