Pet lovers in Congress are outraged over a new discovery that the Pentagon is reportedly funding painful experimental drug tests on beagles in pursuit of FDA approval of a pharmaceutical.
A White Coat Waste Project (WCW) investigation found that the Department of Defense has spent nearly $1 million on the testing, which runs through July and involves force-feeding dogs large doses of an experimental drug to treat Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
A bipartisan bill introduced in the House on Thursday would amend the Public Health Service Act to prohibit federal funding for medical research that involves experiments on dogs and cats.
If passed and signed into law, the Preventing Animal Abuse and Waste Act would effectively end nearly all federal funding of tests on cats and dogs.
It would require reports to Congress by the National Institutes of Health and the Government Accountability Office detailing NIH-funded dog and cat experiments, their cost, and assessments of agency efforts to phase them out.

Bill to allow animals to be retired & re-homed when they are no longer needed for research
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) re-introduced the bipartisan Violet’s Law (also known as the AFTER Act). The bill—named after a hound adopted from a taxpayer-funded laboratory—would allow dogs, cats, primates, rabbits, and other animals to be retired and re-homed when they are no longer needed for research in federal labs.

Legislation would expand consumer choices for FDA-approved generic animal drugs for the care and treatment of both pets and livestock.
